Choosing Memphis People Directories

Memphis people directories do not form one master list. A city roster identifies public staff. A school page lists one campus team. The assessor ties an owner name to a parcel, while a deed index records parties to an event. Current university pages show institutional roles, and older directories preserve a dated campus or household connection. Choose the list that fits the relationship being checked.

Start with the institution for a current role. Use the City Council roster for council staff, the campus page for a teacher, or the University directory for faculty. Begin with property systems only when ownership is the question. For someone who lived in Memphis years ago, library and archive directories are stronger because they preserve old addresses, occupations, phone listings, and school ties.

Each directory should be read as a dated snapshot, then checked against the office, school, parcel, or archive that supplied it.

Memphis School Staff Directories

Memphis-Shelby County Schools does not expose one verified district-wide staff search. The reliable route is school by school. The district school finder identifies a campus, then that school’s staff roster supplies its people. At Treadwell Middle, the “Meet Our Team” tool accepts first and last names and uses pagination. The inspected roster stated that it showed entries 1 through 10 of 82 constituents across nine pages.

A sample entry shows full name, title, and email. Titles can include educational assistant, classroom teacher, curriculum coach, interventionist, special-education teacher, vocational or CCTE staff, and ESL staff. A missing name may mean reassignment or a different campus, so confirm with the school’s main office.

University of Memphis Directories

The University of Memphis Search People directory offers categories, a Complete A-to-Z List, and Whitepages. Department faculty lists may add rank or title, email, phone, and building or room. The university reports more than 2,400 staff and full-time faculty, so the department can be a useful second filter for a common name.

The modern directory gives a present institutional link, not a home contact. Historic campus ties follow a different path. University Special Collections holds digitized directories from 1947 through 2012, starting with a 1947-48 Memphis State College student telephone directory. Those annual snapshots can reconnect classmates or confirm when a student, faculty member, or affiliate appeared.

Note: Search the current department first for an active role, then use the annual directory edition for a past campus tie.

Memphis Government Directory Entries

The Memphis City Council Office Directory is a browsable staff roster. It has no labeled search form, login, export, or stated coverage date. Browser Find is the practical name-search control. Entries connect staff to council work by name, title, direct phone, assigned council member, and committee assignment. City boards and commissions add public member rosters through current pages or selection documents.

The Tennessee Directory broadens the search to state agencies, officials, and phone resources. The General Assembly directory browses legislators and staff A to Z and displays name, position, location or chamber, office, and phone. If a Memphis staff member is not listed, call the relevant department’s main line. For a defined roster that is not online, request the existing record through the city Law Division. Memphis Property Owner Directories

The Shelby County Assessor works as an owner and address directory. A parcel record can show parcel ID, situs address, owner name, owner mailing address, values, legal description, use, and sales history. Situs means where the land lies. The mailing address is where tax correspondence goes, and it may differ. Neither field proves who lives there now.

The official Parcel Identification GIS accepts an address, Parcel ID, or Owner Name through its map and query controls. A parcel click adds mapped context. Follow the parcel number to the Register of Deeds when title matters. The Register’s grantor and grantee index is event-based, so the same name may appear under several deeds, liens, or powers. Grantor means the party giving an interest; grantee means the party receiving it.

Memphis License and Business Directories

Official professional directories answer credential questions. Tennessee Commerce Verify searches individuals or companies and can show status, expiration, and public discipline. Health verification accepts first, middle, and last names, city, state, ZIP, a required profession, license number, and CAPTCHA. The attorney directory supplies official registration, contact, and status information.

For businesses, begin with the Tennessee Secretary of State search by name or control number. Results can identify entity status, type, formation, principal office, registered agent, and filing history. Then check local license or occupancy records and the relevant profession verifier. Contractor verification is sensitive to the exact licensed firm name and often labels the key “Last Name/Firm,” so the state entity search can supply the spelling needed for the next step.

Memphis Record Index Directories

The Shelby County Register works like a party directory for recorded events. Search keys include party name, grantor or grantee role, instrument number, book and page, document type, and recording-date range. An index hit can tie a Memphis name to a deed, mortgage, lien, plat, contract, power of attorney, or affidavit. It does not prove that every named party lived at the linked address.

Use the web index first. If the image or older entry is missing, keep the party spelling, date range, instrument type, and book or page, then call or visit the Register. Shelby County Archives is the fallback for permanent historical series and old indexes. Some lists are intentionally controlled. The Tennessee voter file requires political-purpose certification and is not a general directory. Safe at Home data is removed from public voter lists. Current private community, congregation, and membership rosters were not verified in authoritative sources, so their absence should not be filled with guessed or unofficial lists.

Case indexes form another event-based directory. The Western District of Tennessee is the federal trial court serving Memphis, while PACER is the official federal docket route. A case result shows litigation context, not a personal contact listing.

Historic Memphis People Directories

The Memphis and Shelby County Room at Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library holds printed city directories, telephone books, reverse directories, newspapers, maps, photographs, vertical files, and yearbooks. A standard city directory moves from surname to occupation and address. A reverse or criss-cross volume moves from street address or telephone number to the listed subscriber. The exact year-by-year shelf run was not published, so ask local-history staff to confirm the editions needed.

Use editions on both sides of a move. Publication lag, initials, abbreviations, and widow or boarder notes can show a family transition that one volume misses. Search old spellings and nearby pages when OCR fails. A directory proves that an entry appeared in that edition, not that the person stayed at the address for the full year.

Memphis Directory History at UofM

University of Memphis Special Collections preserves much more than campus phone books. Its regional holdings include about 60,000 books, more than 3,000 oral histories, and over 1,000 maps, plus family papers, Benjamin Hooks papers, newspaper indexes, yearbooks, graduation programs, and sanitation-strike material. University Archives reaches back to the institution’s 1912 West Tennessee State Normal School era.

When the Memphis Press-Scimitar closed in 1984, its indexed clipping “morgue” moved to Special Collections. That pre-web people index reaches topics such as the Crump era, the 1968 sanitation strike, organized labor, public education, aviation, women leaders, and the African-American Mid-South. Shelby County Archives adds court records, death and marriage materials, maps, aerials, West Tennessee Historical Society papers from 1947 through 2010, and unexpected Health Department milk-supply files.

Special Collections is appointment-only in McWherter Library Room 404, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday appointments must be requested by the preceding Friday.
